The best strategy for preventing homelessness is to prevent it from occurring.
With more than 40% of Americans a $400 expense away from financial distress, the threat of crisis looms closely for too many families. Preventing families from spiraling into homelessness is an essential part of the Family Promise mission.
Affiliates offer a variety of strategies to ensure the people we serve do not fall into the cycle of housing instability that can devastate families and alter the course of children’s lives. These include administering formal diversion programs with government funding, providing rental assistance and landlord mediation, and community-based approaches that keep families housed.
Our national partnership with Help Us Move In (HUMI) helps support prevention programming in Affiliates and is an example of how best practices are applied through our federated model.
HELP US MOVE IN (HUMI)
In year three of our partnership, HUMI has made grants to 32 Family Promise Affiliates in prevention and stabilization programs to ensure children are “Homeless No More.” A truly innovative approach, the HUMI partnership encourages community support for homelessness prevention services while raising awareness about the crisis of family homelessness. Family Promise Affiliates have received $530,000 in HUMI funds since 2016, serving more than 1,896 families, including 4,283 children.
The community matches ensure Affiliates are able to sustain homelessness prevention services independently and also have the capability to expand programming. To date, Family Promise has received $1,733,337 in community donations.
The average cost per child to prevent homelessness through the HUMI program is $273. This truly changes the future for children in America.
Our HUMI program is part of the National HUMI Program developed
and supported by the nation wide Family Promise Organization. To learn more about the national HUMI program follow this link.
