Volunteer of the Month Spotlight(s): May

The Kings with their granddaughter

If you have spent any time around Family Promise you have probably met two of the kindest volunteers in our program, Larry and Debbie King.  This dynamic duo has been our greatest supporters since we opened our doors in 2006.

The King’s started at Family Promise as the Volunteer Coordinators for the Mt. Ellis Seventh Day Adventist congregation. In 2006, Larry joined our staff part-time as our Sunday Coordinator.

Every Sunday, Larry picks up our families from the current host congregation and helps pack their belongings in a trailer. Larry then spends the day with our families at our Family Day Center. Around 5:30pm that evening, Larry then moves our families into their new host church for the next week.

On Sundays, Larry also picks up donations items that people would like to donate to our program. Both Larry and Debbie do countless other tasks to ensure that our program runs smoothly.

We are so grateful for the time and energy these two have donated to our program. It only makes sense to honor the King’s by nominating them as our May Volunteer Spotlight(s) of the Month!

Now…let’s learn a little bit more about this great couple.

Name, Occupation:

Larry King:  Certified Nurse Aide at Mountain View Care Center, Bozeman; school bus driver for First Student

Debbie King:  Auditor for the Montana Conference of Seventh-day Adventists; finance office assistant at Mt. Ellis Academy; school bus driver for First Student

How long have you been volunteering for Family Promise and how did you get involved?

Larry and I found out about Family Promise when the Bozeman chapter was trying to get started in 2006.  We listened to Ray’s presentation at our church board meeting and decided that this was a ministry that our church needed to join.

Why do you volunteer?

We wanted to serve our community in a practical hands-on way.  Family Promise presented a very real need.  The Bible tells us that there is hardly a service that is more important than feeding, housing and clothing the homeless, orphaned and widowed.

What is your favorite part of volunteering for Family Promise?

Being with the children!!

Do you have any favorite memories from your time serving Family Promise?

Staying overnight at the various churches.  It was our “date night”!

Do you belong to a congregation or are you an unaffiliated volunteer?

We belong to the Mt. Ellis Academy Seventh-day Adventist Church

Do you have any kids and/or pets?
We have 3 children.  Kelly is 30 years old, married, with 3 babies (a set of 1-year-old twins and a 2-year-old).  Jason is 28 years old.  Carson is 26 years old and married.  We have 2 dogs, Sophie and Nitro, that we walk with every day.

From looking at you, no one would guess that…..

Debbie has run 4 marathons.  Larry is a super horseback rider, skier and iceskater.

Favorite place to eat:

Santa Fe Red’s

What’s on your book shelf?

Church history, biographies, true-life adventures

Who’s your hero?

Our Lord, and our parents

Let’s have three cheers for Larry and Debbie! Our fabulous Volunteer Spotlight(s) for the month of May!
